Breathe Easy: Beat Cattle Pneumonia!

Cattle pneumonia is a common respiratory disease in livestock but can have significant impacts on herd health and productivity if not addressed promptly. Farmers should be vigilant for symptoms such as coughing, nasal discharge, laboured breathing, and a noticeable drop in appetite or energy levels. Additionally, affected cattle may exhibit fever and isolation from the herd. It’s crucial to monitor these signs closely, especially during periods of stress or environmental changes, as these can exacerbate the condition. Early intervention with veterinary guidance, including appropriate antibiotics or supportive care, can prevent severe outbreaks and minimize economic losses. Regular vaccinations, good nutrition, and proper ventilation in housing can also help reduce the risk of pneumonia in cattle.

If you have clinical cases of pneumonia, please speak to one of our vets about our subsidised PCR testing to allow us to identify the pathogens present on your farm and advise on the best preventative strategies for the future.

Why Vaccinate?

Vaccinating cattle against pneumonia is like giving them a strong shield against one of their biggest health threats. Pneumonia can strike fast, causing severe lung infections that make calves sick, slow their growth, and even lead to death. By vaccinating, farmers help their cattle build defenses to fight off harmful viruses and bacteria, keeping them healthier, happier, and more productive. It’s a smart way to protect the herd, reduce costly treatments, and ensure the animals thrive.

Which Vaccine should I use?

We have various prescription only vaccines available to protect cattle against pneumonia, including Bovalto Respi 3 and Bovalto Respi Intranasal in stock. Talk to your vet to find the best option that fits your herd’s specific needs and helps keep your animals healthy.

Bovalto Respi 3

Bovalto Respi 3 is a vaccine for cattle that protects against key respiratory diseases caused by bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV), parainfluenza 3 virus (PI3V), and Mannheimia haemolytica. It is given as two doses three weeks apart, with a booster after six months, helping reduce symptoms and lung damage. The vaccine contains inactivated strains and uses adjuvants to boost immunity.

Bovalto Respi Intranasal

Bovalto Respi Intranasal is a live intranasal vaccine for calves aged 10 days and older. It protects against bovine parainfluenza virus 3 and respiratory syncytial virus by stimulating local immunity in the nose. The vaccine is effective even with maternal antibodies present.

Dose is 2 ml (1 ml per nostril) using a special applicator. Immunity starts around 10 days after vaccination and lasts about 12 weeks. It’s safe, with rare side effects, but vaccinated calves can shed the vaccine virus for up to 6 days. Ideal for early protection and can be used before longer-acting injectable vaccines.

As with all vaccine protocols, please speak to your vet first to get the best advice as all herds differ and we need to ensure that this is the best option for your cows.
